Nissan Extrem Concept by ÍCON Design: From Digital Vision to Full-Scale Reality

THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR

To begin with, the Nissan Extrem Concept by ÍCON Design represents a bold leap in automotive creativity, answering a central question: How does a truly out-of-the-box idea take shape in the automotive sector of a foreign country? In this context, this unique project was created specifically for Brazil, targeting new generations and enthusiasts who value design, authenticity, and a strong visual presence on the road.

“Brazilians live in a country filled with stunning natural beauty and passionate culture. However, this vibrancy is not always reflected in the cars on their streets, especially in more affordable local models, which tend to be conservative in design and specifications,” said Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer. For that reason, the Nissan Extrem Concept by ÍCON Design was developed to challenge this conservatism and introduce a more expressive, youthful identity.

Designed by Nissan Design America (NDA) in San Diego in collaboration with Brazilian designers and modelers, and built by ÍCON Design alongside EDAG Group, the project required transforming a digital concept into a highly refined, visually striking real model. As a result, compact, agile, and bold, the concept anticipated a new generation of urban compact sports cars.

THE ZERO MOMENT: WHERE THE CONCEPT BEGINS

In the first place, creating a vehicle prototype goes far beyond replicating shapes. In fact, the process behind the Nissan Extrem Concept by ÍCON Design demanded translation, interpretation, and refinement—bringing an idea from the digital world into tangible form. To clarify, the journey began with a 1:3 scale model, marking the start of a workflow that integrated engineering, design, and craftsmanship with precision.

At this stage, digital surfaces were organized and refined, defining the visual identity of the concept. Meanwhile, the ÍCON Alias team collaborated closely with the designers, perfecting curves, transitions, and volumes before any physical material was shaped. Consequently, this synergy ensured that the physical model would faithfully express the original design vision.

MATERIALIZING THE IDEA: CRAFTING THE 1:3 MODEL

With digital surfaces approved, the next step was constructing the 1:3 scale physical model. At this point, this phase validated proportions, the flow of the vehicle’s surfaces, and the balance of the design. EDAG handled structural development, while at the same time ÍCON Design refined aesthetic details to maintain full design fidelity.

Clay modeling played a crucial role. For example, through handcrafted expertise, specialists sculpted and smoothed the clay surfaces, enabling millimeter-level adjustments impossible to detect in digital format. Moreover, the ongoing exchange between virtual refinement and physical shaping strengthened the precision and authenticity of the Nissan Extrem Concept by ÍCON Design.

1:1 SCALE MODEL: BRINGING THE CONCEPT TO LIFE

After perfecting the smaller model, the project then advanced to its full-scale 1:1 prototype. Naturally, every detail became more pronounced at this stage, demanding an even higher level of technical accuracy. Once again, collaboration between ÍCON and EDAG ensured the original design intent remained intact as the concept transitioned to real size.

At this stage, new machining processes, additional clay layers, and extensive visual analysis under varying lighting conditions were required. Thus, every crease, angle, and transition was evaluated to ensure the model carried the strength, personality, and expressive identity envisioned from the start.

Once refinement was complete, in due time, the transition to the final resin model began. As a result, the material provided structure, durability, and an exhibition-ready finish. Finally, painting, texturing, and assembling visual components transformed the prototype into a show model with full aesthetic impact.

THE FINAL UNVEILING

Ultimately, the final Nissan Extrem Concept by ÍCON Design was unveiled at the 2013 São Paulo International Motor Show. By comparison with conventional prototypes, the resin model stood out for its advanced technology and meticulous craftsmanship. Without a doubt, the seamless collaboration between EDAG and ÍCON impressed designers, executives, and automotive fans alike.
